Looking for things in the same place

The other day my dad bought some chocolate. Being the mature person who wishes to honour his parents I am, I hid the chocolate. But it gave me an interesting insight in to people's habits. Once he realised that it was missing he tried looking for it. But he kept on looking in the same places. He would look under a pile of paper, then in a kitchen cupboard and then he would check under the paper again, as if it could have magically appeared while he was looking in the cupboard. He kept on doing this, checking under the paper or in the cupboard or in his coat pocket again and again.

However, we all do this in our life. We look for meaning and fulfillment in different places. Whether it is money, academic achievement or frivilous relationships. After a while we realise that perhaps the meaning and fulfillment we were looking for is not there. It did not have the significance or rewards that we thought it would. But, more often than not, we return to these places to look for satisfaction even though we know it won't be there.

Proverbs 26:11 gives us a very good, albeit grim, picture to describe this: "As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly." If we look for satisfaction in meaningless places again and again we are the same as a dog who goes back to eat its puke. That's grim.
